Powakaddy was founded in 1983 by Joe Catford (mechanical engineer) when they launched the powakaddy classic electric golf trolleys from a small factory in Sittingbourne, UK. At that time it was the first commercially released electric golf caddy ever in the U.K. Since then, the company changed ownerships several times and brought several different electric golf caddies to the market including the powakaddy freeway II and the freeway sport. Many of the early models were plagued with poor quality and performance. Fast forward 40 years and powakaddy golf introduced the Freeway 3 (FW3), Freeway 5 (FW5), and the Freeway 7 (FW7) models in 2014. Since then, the FW Series have been discontinued and Powakaddy introduced the FX and CT Series which folds up much smaller for easier transport and has added features such as GPS.
The new powakaddy models are getting many positive reviews from golf cart review sites and customers alike. Let’s take a look at the new powakaddy models.
First the similarities between the FX & CT models:
- All three models are non-remote control carts.
- All come with super light-weight lithium ion battery (4.4 lbs) – Available in 18 hole or Extended Lithium Ion battery.
- All three frames are very light (~21-22 lbs), but durable.
- All three models come with a 2 year limited warranty on the cart and 5 year prorated warranty on the battery.
- They all have the off-power free wheeling mode which allows you to push the cart freely when the power is turned off.
- All three have the plug’n play battery which allows you to plug the battery in and go right off to play. No need to connect any wires. Brilliant idea and makes it very simple to use.
- Finally, they all come with the simple three step folding system which allows you to fold the cart in seconds into its very compact size – The CT6 and CT8 is the most compact electric cart on the market today with folded dimensions of 20"(L) x 16.7"(W) x 14.7"(H).
Now the differences between the models:
- FX3 is a simple starter electric caddy with no extras. The FX3 is only available in gun metal silver frames.
- FX5 is a great electric caddy with some extras such as 1) USB charging socket which allows you to charge the smart phone, GPS, etc. , 2) Automatic Distance Function (ADF) which allows you to send the cart to the next hole with the pre-set distances of 15, 30, and 45 yards. 3) It also comes with the digital power gauge so you know exactly where you are with the power so you’re not left stranded on the course without power. The FX5 is only available in gun metal silver in the U.S.
- FX7 is the top model of the FX series and it comes with all the functions of the FX3 and FX5 plus bonus features such as clock, speed display, distance measurement, etc. FX7 also has an optional EBS (Electronic Braking System) and GPS. The FW7 is only available in gun metal silver in the U.S.
- CT6 is one of the most compact caddies in the world and comes with EBS and GPS option.
- CT8 has all the features of the CT6 but with a larger display size.
