Miscellaneous FAQs

How do I brake when going down hill?
On most 'manual' or single motor trolleys, it is highly likely that the rear wheels will incorporate single direction Sprag Clutches. These are designed to allow the trolley to be driven as well as freewheeled forwards. This is to help the golfer to steer the trolley easily, however the other effect is that the trolley could 'run away' when going downhill (unless prevented by the golfer holding on to the handle)

Stewart Golf remote controlled golf trollies have direct drive in both directions through a 25:1 worm wheel gear box. This is required to allow the steering to work effectively in both directions, as well as allowing the machines to drive backwards and forwards. This also has the effect of dramtically slowing the trolley when going downhill. It also has the addition of an emergency brake that will bring the unit to a stop if required (this is not a 'true' brake, so the trolley may still 'creep' when on a steep hill). Also by making small turns down a steep hill the speed can be controlled even on the steepest of hills (because during a turn one wheel uses the braking mechanism)

What type of motor brushes do I have?
To ascertain the type of motor brush you need to check if the motors on your trolley have the 'nodes' on the top and bottom of the cylinder that holds the brushes (like in the image at http://www.stewartgolf.co.uk/product/X-MOTOR/X-Series+Motor) if so, then you have the changeable brushes or if the brushes are held in the end caps of the motors then you need to replace the end cap assemblies.

If you have any doubt, please send an image to info@stewartgolf,com.

How do I put my trolley into freewheel mode?
If you want to put your alloy or V3 wheels in to the free wheel mode, please follow these instructions. Firstly, with one hand tip the trolley slightly to lift the wheels of one side off the ground. Using the other hand, hold the hub of the wheel with your thumb on the black button. Press the button fully and withdraw the wheel by 4cm (or so) and turn it by around 45 degrees and then push the wheel back towards the trolley. Release the button and waggle the wheel to ensure the button comes back out and the wheel spins freely. Repeat for the other side.

To re-engage drive, lift the wheels of one side off the ground with one hand and use the other hand to hold the hub of the wheel with your thumb on the black button. Fully depress the button and apply light inward pressure while turning the wheel slowly until the wheel goes a further cm or so. Release the button and waggle the wheel to ensure the button comes out and the wheel is secure and wheel is stiff to turn.

How do I set the trim (Motor Balancing) on my trolley?
Over time the two motors in your trolley can wear unevenly. This may cause the trolley to 'lean' to one side when it should be going in a straight line.

You can fine tune the 'trim' from the handset by using the procedure below:

  1. Place the trolley (with bag) on a flat surface.
  2. Press and hold both the 'brake' and 'off' buttons for 5 seconds until the trolley starts off. On older trolleys press the 'off' button (next to the 1,2,3,4 buttons) for 10 seconds, or until the trolley starts off.
  3. Use the left and right buttons to fine tune the steering until you have the trolley going straight.
  4. Press the brake (the red button) to store this new setting.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you are happy that it's straight.

I have broken my belt clip, what do I do?
If the clip on the back of the remote handset of the X or F Series has been over stretched this can cause fatigue and eventually break. Don't worry though as this can be easily repaired.

You have two options:

  1. Replacement handset back & clip.
We have put these parts together so that you just have to remove the two screws at the top & bottom of the handset, replace the whole back moulding and then replace. You should see that the handset has been sealed with silicone sealant. Ideally you should do this as well to guard against water ingress.
  2. Silicone Handset Skin.
The handset skin can be fitted to any remote handset. It comes supplied with a new handset back and a new extended and extra flexible belt clip (it has to be extended to compensate for the thickness of the skin).

Note: Older handsets with silver button pads can still use the skin, but the buttons may not align perfectly.

Both are available to buy online, please look under the 'Spares' tab or search for 'handset' using the search bar.

X Series FAQs

X9 / F1 - 18 or 36 Hole Battery?
We are not able to guarantee any battery for 36 holes for the following reasons.

  • 18 holes of golf is not a finite measurement. There can be a difference of several miles from a short to a long course (taking the distance between green and tee in to account too).
  • Terrain, ground condition, bag weight, and a number of other factors can make a big difference. Imagine running along a flat concrete road as opposed to up a steep sand dune & you'll get the idea.
  • The quality of the golf also affects how far you walk. A golfer shooting 65 will walk a lot less than a golfer shooting 110 and zig-zagging up the fairways! This scenario would also see the steering being used more, which also consumes more power.

Many customers have completed 36 holes with their trolleys on a single charge, however if you play 36 on a regular basis we recommend that you purchase an additional battery pack.

Are X9 batteries compatible with lead acid chargers?
X9 batteries must only be charged using the charging equipment supplied with the battery. It is not possible to charge the battery using any other charging equipment.

Are X9 batteries dangerous?
No is the simple answer! Unfortunately certain other types of Lithium battery can be dangerous if not treated in the correct manner. The X9 battery is made from LiFePO4 (Lithium ion Phosphate) which is widely recognised as the safest type of lithium battery. This makes it the material of choice for electric vehicle manufacturers.

How long will an X9 battery last?
The lifetime of a battery is determined by a number of factors including regularity of play, weight of golf bag, course type, trolley age and trolley type. With this in mind it is not possible to predict how long a battery will last. Despite this, we are confident that an X7 Lithium battery will last five times longer than a lead-acid equivalent.

How should an X9 battery be stored if not used for considerable periods of time?
For storage in excess of four months, it is recommended to fully charge the battery before reducing the level of charge to around 60% (ideally by using it for 40% of its capacity). It should then be fully charged prior to its next use.

Is it possible to use an X9 battery and still use a lead-acid battery?
Yes. The X9 battery is designed to work just like a lead acid battery with no modification required.

Should a X9 battery be recharged if not been used for a full round?
X9 batteries do not suffer from a "memory effect" seen in certain other high technology batteries. This means that it will not cause any damage to the battery. The only effect will be a quicker charge!

What is the best way to maximise the life of an X9 battery?
Thanks to the advanced battery management system, the X9 battery is protected against overcharging and excessive discharge during use. Despite this there is still a danger of damage to the battery if left un-charged after use. The best way to prolong the life of your battery is to charge it as soon as possible after each round.

What is the safest way to dispose of an X9 battery?
At Stewart Golf we are dedicated to protecting the environment and strongly recommend disposing of our batteries in a safe and environmentally friendly way. X9 batteries can be taken to a registered recycling point or alternatively returned to Stewart Golf to allow us to recycle them.

What maintenance is recommended for X9 batteries?
In addition to regular charging, it is recommended to regularly check the battery connections and keep the battery clean with a damp cloth.

What battery can I use as a replacement on my X1, X3, X5, X7 or X9?

  1. Lead Acid
This is the equivalent battery that was supplied with the X1, X3 and X5. Providing your original charger is in good working order, you will be able to use this with a replacement lead-acid battery.
  2. Lithium Phosphate (LiFePO4)
This is the battery that is supplied as standard with the X7 Lithium and X9 models and is the option that we recommend. It has several significant benefits over the lead-acid battery, such as:

    - Weight reduction (3kg instead of 12kg)
    - Smaller size
    - Longer overall life
    - More reliable charging
    - Constant power delivery (so the trolley won't slow towards the end of a round)

This is supplied as a set with battery and charger - your old lead-acid charger will not charge the new lithium battery.

F Series FAQs

X9 / F1 - 18 or 36 Hole Battery?

How do I set the Cruise Control Speeds?
There are 2 different methods to program the cruise speeds and they it depends on the version of electronics you have. They are as follows-

If you can slow your trolley down all the way to a stop (version 1) set the trolley to the speed you want a cruise button to be set at and then press and hold that cruise button until the solid light on the handset begins to flash. That button will then give you that speed.

If the trolley slows down to a lower limit (Version 2) from stopped, press and hold the emergency stop (red square) and the cruise button you wish to change. After a second or 2, the trolley will set off. Then use the up or down arrow button to select the speed you require and then store the speed by pressing the emergency stop (red square).

My battery meter is showing a flashing outline even when fully charged?
If your F1 Lithium shows a flashing outline of the battery even though it is fully charged, please take the following action:

  1. Disconnect the battery from either the trolley or the charger. Also switch off the charger and disconnect from the wall.
  2. Leave for a minimum of 10 full days. This will trigger the 'sleep mode' within the battery which is designed to protect the lithium cells.
  3. 'Wake Up' the battery by plugging it in to the charger, then connecting the charger to the wall, switching on and allowing it to complete a charge cycle.
  4. Insert the battery back in to the trolley.

If that course of action does not work please contact us and we will advise on the next course of action.

About the fuel guage:
Like many modern lithium batteries, the F1 battery has a BMS (Battery Management System) which monitors the cells within the battery to ensure balanced charging and use, amongst other things.

A function of the BMS in the F1 battery is a 'fuel gauge' which sends information to the screen of the F1 and displays the amount of energy left to use. This works by measuring the amount of energy going in to the battery when charging, and then the amount of energy coming out when the trolley is being used.

A flashing outline should occur when the battery is almost flat, however if it is still showing after a full charge then there is an error in the BMS which is causing the fuel gauge to send incorrect information. Following the instructions above should 'reset' this gauge.

If the above fails to rectify the issue, please contact us as it is possible that the issue lies elsewhere in the battery or electronics system.

R Series FAQs

Why is it called the R1 Push?
The 'R' stands for 'rack' as this is the basis of the design, and '1' is because this is the first of a brand new design. We decided against continuing the Z Series names (Z1 and Z3 were our previous push trolleys) as a Z5 infers an iterative progression from a Z3, whereas the R1 is a completely new design so deserves a completely new name. The 'R' also stands for 'Ross' which is the first name of our Chairman Ross Stewart, who came up with the rack & pinion folding concept.

Is the R1 Push really built in Great Britain?
Yes every single one is built by hand in Gloucestershire, just like our exclusive X & F Series powered products. Parts for the R1 Push are made by specialist manufacturers across the world, and then assembled by hand right here in Great Britain. This allows us to ensure every product meets our exacting standards before it reaches you.

Will I be able to get spare parts?
Of course! As we assemble the R1 Push in GB we have every part, you will be able to buy these from our eCommerce website or from your local distributor.

How should I clean my R1 Push?
You should just use a damp cloth to keep the trolley clean from dust or dirt. If your club has an airline you can use this to carefully blow any dust from the visible parts of the mechanism. It is not recommended that you use a pressure washer or hosepipe, water could get in to the tubes or damage the bearings.

How does the R1 Push compare against the Z Series trolleys?
Very well. The R1 Push actually folds 33% smaller than the Z1/Z3 did, mostly thanks to the front wheel folding under the trolley and the rear wheels folding in further. Despite folding smaller, the R1 Push has more features and 4 times more storage volume in the handle. Innovative placement of ball and umbrella holders make this even more significant, allowing you to store large items such as sunglasses inside the console.

Why are the main tubes triangular not round or oval like other trolleys?
Louis Sullivan's famous axiom, "form follows function" is never truer than here. As you can see in the ‘how it works’ section, the rear wheels fold courtesy of two angled racks mated to a flat top rack. These angles are critical to the way the R1 Push works, so it made sense to create a custom shaped tube to fit the angled racks perfectly.

In order to maintain continuity in the aesthetic, this same profile is used for the main upright tube. In addition, the ball marker also uses the same profile. This both echo’s the main shape of the machine, and also ensures the SG logo is always aligned correctly.

Can I get hedgehog winter wheels for the R1 Push?
Yes you will be able to. These are currently underway and we expect to have them by the time the winter comes around. If you sign up for the mailing list above or register your warranty, you’ll be emailed as soon as they are available.

What do you mean, "can hold any bag"?
Many golfers who use a push trolley also like to carry sometimes. Stand/carry bags usually have a leg mechanism which then does not sit properly on a trolley. We have designed our bag jaws to grip the bags outer edges, allowing the mechanism to sit through the middle. This means your bag will be the ‘right way up’, allowing access to your pockets and clubs as the designers intended.

Z Series FAQs

How do I look after my Z Series?
The following video will give you some helpful pointers on how to keep your Z-Series Push in perfect working order.

  1. Cleaning & lubricating the frame.
Golf courses can throw up all kinds of dust and dirt, which can build up in the moving parts of the Z-Series mechanism. To avoid this happening, ensure that you clean the frame regualrly using a damp cloth - ideally after every round. We also recommend the use a PTFE Dry Lubricant spray on all moving parts.
  2. Adjusting frame stiffness.
If your Z-Series does not unfold as easily as the one shown in the demo video, you can adjust 8 points on the frame until it does. You should make sure the frame is clean before you start this process, just to ensure that stiffness is not caused by dirt or grit. When making adjustments to the 8 points shown on the video, only ever make them 1/2 a turn at a time. Also make sure that the end of each bolt is always through each nut, this ensures that the nylock nut will not vibrate free.
  3. Reducing handle movement
Over time & use, you may notice movement in the handle that you didn't notice when it was new. This can be adjusted as shown in the video. Be careful not to overtighten this part as you could make it difficult to close the lever.

How do I adjust the handle tightness?
To adjust the handle tighness you will need an 8mm or 5/16" socket.

  1. Open the Z-Series as usual with the handle up & locked (or held in position if loose).
  2. Ensure the locking lever is closed.
  3. Slowly tighten the nut until you feel the resistance increase. At this point stop tightening and try to open and close the lever, and try to move the handle to see if the play has been removed.
  4. Make small adjustments until you are happy with the tension.

NOTE: Do not over tighten the nut as this could damage the moulding. Please click here to see the video demonstrating the above proceedure.

How do I fit Hedgehog wheels to my Z Series?
The hedgehog set is supplied as a complete set of 3 wheels that fit easily to your trolley. The two large rear wheels are fitted simply by using the quick release function.

The front wheel is supplied fitted with the axle and black plastic mounting blocks to allow simple fitment to the existing fork on your Z1/3. To fit this:

  1. Remove the two screws from each side of the fork (4 in total).
  2. Carefully pull the old (non-hedgehog) wheel from the fork.
  3. Insert the new hedgehog wheel into the fork (it does not matter which way up it goes).
  4. Insert and tighten the 4 screws, being careful not to overtighten. Overtightening may strip the thread inside the block.
  5. You may have to align the front wheel to ensure the trolley runs in a straight line (instructions were supplied with the trolley).

My umbrella holder has broken, what shall I do?
The 'standard' umbrella holder sold with Z3 Push trolleys is a design that we have used since September 2010 on our X & F Series powered machines, and on the majority of Z1 Push trolleys sold in 2011.

Although the tube and thread are made from plastic, this is reinforced with a metal pin through the centre of the thread which is where the vast majority of the stress is concentrated. Initially this was drilled and pinned here in the UK, but after the concept was proven the pin was instead 'moulded' in place as part of the manufacturing process.

The first delivery of Z3 Push trolleys in 2012 experienced a relatively high failure rate with the umbrella holder breaking at the point where the screw thread meets the umbrella tube. This has been investigated and the cause found to be substandard pins, some of which were corroded prior to being moulded in to the tube. This corrosion meant that the plastic of the tube never fully bonded to the pin, which weakened the design significantly.

The next batch of umbrella holders is being made with specially made pins which have been made in the UK and shipped to the manufacturer for moulding. The new pins:

  1. Are made of stainless steel 303, ensuring that there will be no corrosion
  2. Are a slightly larger diameter
  3. Will be knurled which gives a much better surface for the plastic of the moulding to 'grip' to
